Abstract: This working paper takes as its starting point the work of the German economic sociologist, Jens Beckert, and his call for empirical investigations into how intentionally rational actors reach decisions under conditions when they do not know what is best to do. It describes how trade fairs act as a framing mechanism that enables participants to come together for the exchange of goods and services and to perceive themselves as acting in a social field. Fairs frame the contacts people make and sustain as networks; the institutional rules and social norms guiding their behaviour there; and the values and cognitive frames that they bring to bear and negotiate with other participants. They make actors aware of a ‘mutual correspondence’ in their interpretation of the goods in which they deal and of the social situations in which engage for the sake of such trade. Abstract: This chapter explores some of the central cultural tenets of career and film making among elite members of the Danish film industry, or what is less than elegantly and somewhat grammatically incorrectly referred to as ‘the cultural of production and career’ in the title of this chapter. The theoretical reasons for this formulation is to train focus on the ideational dimensions of culture in the Danish film industry, especially as refracted through reflections on work and career by film workers. In this sense the approach, though less inclusive and ambitious, resembles Caldwell’s interest in ‘indigenous interpretive frameworks in Production Culture.i The chapter also argues that production and career decisions and actions are inextricable intertwined. Sometimes the two are consciously and manifestly related to each other, in terms of deliberating the implications that working on a given film, with given persons, in a given manner, etc. will have on one’s further work possibilities; or the reverse, how career considerations impact how films get made in terms of who works on them and what resources, skills, tastes, and perspectives are brought into and realized in a production. Sometimes the interrelation of these considerations remains latent. This chapter explores how certain cultural underpinnings support these mutually intertwined considerations. Abstract: Purpose: Social media hold promises for companies to engage with a variety of stakeholders about CSR issues and thereby enhance stakeholder relationships. However, by implementing a social media strategy companies face different constraints. With this paper barriers diminishing stakeholder dialogue in the Web 2.0 are identified. Design and methodology: With a single case in‐depth‐study we analyze the implementation of a communication strategy of a recently launched CSR‐twitter‐account of a European based pharmaceutical company leading in CSR. Data is derived from interviews with four managers with central roles in strategy formulation and implementation. Findings: Five factors diminishing stakeholder dialogue are identified: Lack of resources, unfamiliarity with social media, managerial scepticism, internal guidelines and culture, and external regulations. These barriers prevent basic principles of relationship building online, such as regular updates or conversational human voice. Research limitations: With a single case study the representative value of the results is limited. However, the results give valuable insights into the challenges and concerns management faces when implementing a CSR communication strategy in social media. Practical implications: The results show that organisational constraints have to be addressed in order to implement a successful social media strategy. We therefore argue that corporate communications has to increasingly emphasis organisational aspects. Originality: To date, only little research has been done about CSR communication in social media. Furthermore, the research paper presents highly relevant and new findings by drawing the attention to organizational rooted challenges of corporate communication and strategy implementation. Abstract: Background: The present study is the first study of Danish consumers on compulsive buying. It draws on a representative sample of 1,015 Danish consumers (aged between 15 and 84 years) and extends prior research undertaken in other countries (such as Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, Canada, the US). It is the first study to shed light on the situation in a Scandinavian context and is designed to allow for a comparison with the situation in other countries. Results: The prevalence of compulsive buying tendencies in Denmark are: 9.75% of the respondents show compensatory buying behavior and 5.81% show compulsive buying tendencies. These percentages are similar to those found in Germany and slightly lower than in Austria. They are also within the range of preferences in other countries. Regarding socio‐demographics, age and sex play a decisive role while marital status, education and income cannot be associated with compulsive buying. If there is such a thing like “a typical shopaholic”, it would be a women aged between 25 and 44 years, disregarding whether she is a single or not, has a low or high education and income. The internet offers shopping opportunities that lure both, potential shopaholics and compensatory buyers more than inconspicuous buyers. Compensatory and compulsive buyers have far more customer cards than others. Conclusion: To sum up, this study identifies diverse factors that are related to compulsive buying behavior. To find out what cause is and what effect, more qualitative research as well as experimental studies are needed. Additionally, more intercultural comparisons could lead to insights into the effects of the social and cultural consumption environment, i.e., the role of norms, values, policies, and the mass media on buying behavior. This type of research has, to date, not been undertaken in any Scandinavian country. A first step is the comparison of Danish, Austrian and German data which is currently undertaken. The results of the present study together with future analyses could feed into strengthening consumer education and informing debt counseling and consumer advice. Abstract: Many studies on the creative labor market have been done with the purpose to get knowledge on the creative workers employment, working conditions, income etc. (e.g. Alper and Wassall (2006), Throsby (2001), Throsby and Hollister (2003), Heian, Løyland and Mangset (2008), Abbing (2002). Most studies have been based on interviews and this approach has of course its pros and cons. Very few studies are based on true longitudinal data making it possible to study artists income development and survival in the professions (one exception is Coulangeon et al., 2005) The aim of this study is to analyze, comparatively for different groups of artists, the factors that affect 1) the income of artists, and 2) the probability of an artist exits the artists labor market. The paper compares different groups of artists, by looking at income functions and survival functions concerning risks to exit the labor market, using event history techniques (survival functions and Cox regressions). Abstract: How can organizations innovate and break with conventions without losing their legitimacy? Organizing for legitimacy (serving tradition and convention) often contrasts organizing for innovation and is often perceived a choice between two evils. This paper suggests that leaders can reconcile the legitimacy-innovation tension by combining and addressing them as two complimentary processes. An ethnographic case study depicts how shared leadership in a highly successful filmmaking company, confronts the legitimacy-innovation tension and, based on a combination of ‘out-of-fashion’ and contra-intuitive actions, their search for new solutions makes them balance between being a rebel or an outlaw. A Case Study of Branding and Identity Struggles in a Low-Prestige OrganizationFrandsen, Sanne (Frederiksberg, 2011)[More information][Less information]
Abstract: This dissertation examines the relationship between corporate branding and identity work at organizational and individual levels in the context of a lowprestige corporation. It is based on 17 months of research undertaken as an inhouse ethnographer at MGP, a European based national telecommunication corporation. The study seeks to contribute to integrated corporate branding theory by adopting a critical perspective on the intra-organizational affects of brands and branding. The dissertation contains three papers, each of which contributes to discussions within corporate branding, organizational identity and identification, as well as to literature on management control and employee resistance. The findings demonstrate that the management adopts integrated corporate branding in a hypocritical manner, while employees in response develop a cynical distance to their work. While this may be interpreted as negative consequences, the dissertation argues that these are productive and have certain advantages for the management in the given context. Thus, the findings challenge the integrated corporate branding ideal of coherence between the external and internal dimensions of corporate branding as the only productive way to create a successful corporate brand. Abstract: This working paper – written for inclusion as a chapter on Japanese society, to be published in Chinese by the Beijing University of Foreign Studies later in 2011 – looks at popular culture as a form of cultural production. It argues for the need to study popular cultural forms like advertisements, ceramics, fashion magazines and folk art as both products and as processes of design, manufacture, distribution, appreciation and use, which must all be taken into account. Precisely because popular cultural forms are both cultural products and commodities, they reveal the complementary nature of the two categories of culture and the economy. The paper outlines and analyses the different ways in which social, cultural, symbolic and economic capital are converted by those participating in advertising, ceramic, fashion magazine and folk art worlds, and suggests that popular culture may best be seen as a name economy. Abstract: This paper discusses the practice of ranking linked to the issue of place branding focusing on two cases from Denmark, one the national level, the other on the local level, namely the city of Copenhagen. Rankings of places have increased, and – as we shall argue – so have their influence on identity negotiation and public policy. Drawing on experiences with rankings in other fields (corporate reputation and higher education) and critical work on polling, we examine their growing influence, unanticipated consequences and claims to represent places and people. Abstract: The purpose of this article is to explore how Chinese and expatriate managers, working in subsidiaries of five MNCs, communicate and collaborate, what kind of cultural encounters they talk about and give prominence to in their accounts of critical incidents, how they reflect upon them/ explain them, and how they cope with perceived similarities and differences to improve cross-cultural communication and collaboration within a global organization. Using an inductive qualitative methodology and thematic analysis, the study draws on indepth narrative interviews with 29 expatriate and 39 Chinese managers and experts. The specific value of this paper is that it explores a hitherto under-researched issue and provides insight into well-educated expatriate and Chinese managers´ accounts of how they perceive themselves and others in a multicultural work context. In both groups we find widely traveled, flexible and open-minded people, who are ready and have the capabilities to conduct cross-cultural leadership. Abstract: This paper examines perfume advertising within the overall context of theoretical approaches to the study of smell. Pointing out that smell is marked by a paucity of language, it proceeds to examine how smell is represented in perfume advertisements. Based on an analysis of more than 250 ads worldwide, the paper asks if there are any consistent relations between language, colours and smell materials, as well as between models’ poses, seasons, and classes of perfume (floral, oriental, woody, and so on). It proceeds to survey a number of writings linking colour with smell, and suggests that olfactory marketing should, perhaps, be more consistent in its linking of these two domains in advertising and packaging. Abstract: Because interventions related to diet and other health behaviours are seldom successful and/or sustainable, it is extremely important to identify the individual factors that contribute to a healthier or unhealthier diet. To this end, we use cross-sectional data from the IDEFICS study to analyse the dietary behaviour of children aged between 2 and 9 years in eight European countries. We model the complex nature of these individual factors using structural equation modelling. Our results show that both sedentary behaviour and food exposure are strong contributors to children’s dietary choices. However, although we find a positive relation between a healthy diet and weight status for girls, weight status appears independent of diet quality for boys. These outcomes, although they permit no firm conclusions on health policy strategies, clearly suggest that further research based on longitudinal data could provide valuable insights for the design of successful prevention and intervention strategies. Abstract: This study explores how companies use the social media tool Twitter for CSR communication in order to establish good public relations. By analyzing CSR communication conducted by 30 most central corporate Twitter accounts, identified through social network analysis within a CSR‐Twitter‐network consisting of 19’855 Twitter members, we contribute to the understanding of Twitter’s role for CSR communication and public relations. Manually conducted content analysis of totally 41‘864 corporate Twitter messages gives insights into different strategies concerning intensity and interactivity of CSR communication. Abstract: This working paper is a case study about the development of a faience product line in Royal Copenhagen and illustrates several aspects of how, at what stages of development, and by whom, cultural products in general are evaluated. Three theoretical issues emerge. One concerns the constraints imposed upon design and production by the use of materials and, to a lesser extent, technology. Another argues that product development has to take place within a particular brand and genre – in this case, those of Royal Copenhagen. A third reveals the way in which the design and manufacture of a particular cultural product had to be negotiated within a particular organizational world embracing both management and workers, with differentiated skills. Abstract: To understand the rising prevalence of obesity in affluent societies, it is necessary to take into account the growing obesity infrastructure, which over past decades has developed into an obesogenic environment. This infrastructure is a direct reflection of the mainstream economic growth paradigm that the literature on consumer culture characterizes as chronic overconsumption. This study examines the effects of one of the constituent factors of consumer societies and a key contributory factor to childhood obesity: commercial food communication targeted to children and its impact on their food knowledge and food preferences. Because evaluations of traditional information- and education-based interventions suggest that they may not sustainably change food patterns, we combine insights from behavioral economics and traditional consumer behavior theory to formulate seven hypotheses, which we then test using a subsample from the IDEFICS study. The results reveal not only that advertising has divergent effects on children’s food knowledge and preferences but that food knowledge is unrelated to food preferences, a finding that has important implications for future research and public policy. Abstract: Program management includes a multitude of decisions on numerous parameters: course content, modes of delivery, management of professional and academic standards, admission, grading, finance, and marketing. At the same time, program management is seen as an organisational response to demands from multiple stakeholders with conflicting interests. How does the process assure salient stakeholders influence on program management decisions? Five groups of stakeholders are considered: Faculty/academics, students, industry/employers, the Institution (senior management), and society at large. Different HEIs have chosen different solutions to program management. In this paper we (1) sketch a conceptual framework for an analysis of HE program management and (2) describe the framework for study program management at Copenhagen Business School (CBS) in Denmark, reflecting on the benefits and shortcomings of this particular organisational model. The discussion serves as a point of departure for developing a holistic model that both addresses multiple tasks and legitimate stakeholder interests. Abstract: It seems to be an established fact in the organizational psychological literature that participation in decision making leads to creativity and innovation in work groups and organizations. A quite extensive amount of research has claimed that the link exists, although only a somewhat smaller amount of research has established that there is a link between the two constructs of participation in decision making and creativity. But although this link has been clearly documented theories with clearly stated causal explanations of why participation in decision making (pdm) would lead to creativity and innovation are extremely rare. The literature has pointed to a large number of mediating variables and possible effects of pdm that could possibly explain the link to creativity, but explicit causal theories and experimental evidence of the validity of such theories remain relatively few. Suggested mediating factors include such different models as enhanced intrinsic motivation (Amabile, 2001; Conti & Amabile, 1999), reduction in resistance to change (De Dreu & West, 2001), pooling of unshared knowledge (Latham, Winters, & Locke, 1994) and better utilization of individual differences in cognitive style (Kirton, 1989), and improved work environment for creativity (e.g., Isaksen, Lauer, Ekvall, & Britz, 2001).
