Abstract: A method is presented for incremental retraining of an SMT system, in which a local phrase table is created and incrementally updated as a file is translated and post-edited. It is shown that translation data from within the same file has higher value than other domain-specific data. In two technical domains, within-file data increases BLEU score by several full points. Furthermore, a strong recency effect is documented; nearby data within the file has greater value than more distant data. It is also shown that the value of translation data is strongly correlated with a metric defined over new occurrences of ngrams. Finally, it is argued that the incremental re-training prototype could serve as the basis for a practical system which could be interactively updated in real time in a post-editing setting. Abstract: The title of my talk is “Informational balance. Understanding Romance and Germanic Compounding in a lexico-typological perspective”. What I basically mean by informational balance is that semantic content is distributed systematically differently between nouns and verbs in the Romance and Germanic languages, and that this distribution is complementary. I shall explain that in detail in a minute, but first I shall introduce you to the problem, which I believe can be explained on the basis of this idea about “informational balance”. Abstract: Modern hearing aids use a variety of advanced digital signal processing methods in order to improve speech intelligibility. These methods are based on knowledge about the acoustics outside the ear as well as psychoacoustics. We present a novel observation based on the fact that acoustic prominence is not equal to information prominence for time intervals at the syllabic and sub-syllabic levels. The idea is that speech elements with a high degree of information can be robustly identified based on basic acoustic properties. We evaluated the correlation of (information rich) content words in the DanPASS corpus with fundamental frequency (F0) and spectral tilt across four frequency bands. Our results show a correlation of certain band-level differences and the presence of content words. Similarly, but to a lesser extent, a correlation between F0 and the presence of content words was found. The principle described here has the potential to improve the “information-to-noise” ratio in hearing aids. In addition, this concept may also be applicable in automatic speech recognition systems. Abstract: The proliferation of Internet technologies in the workspace provides tremendous possibilities for knowledge workers to access vast amounts of information from a large number of sources. The information abundance offers new opportunities which empower the knowledge worker but at the same time may create information overload. This study explores academics’ information management practices, by applying a theoretical framework build on three theoretical perspectives. These involve mindfulness, sense-making, and decision-making heuristics. The theoretical framework is used to analyse diary data about three tasks: email management, communication with colleagues, and information search. Our findings show that the knowledge workers have developed their own relatively simple but seemingly suitable practices for dealing with information overload and being empowered from the abundant information available to them. The relative amateurism and professionalism of the participants are discussed and limitations of this study as well as areas for future research are delineated. Abstract: This paper addresses the potential clash between the “non-failure” culture of the hospital and the “fail-fast-forward” approach of innovation by sharing and analysing narratives from a field study of innovation processes. The case is a large university hospital in Scandinavia and the health care sector in general is outlined as context of the challenges addressed by the innovation processes. The narratives fall into three overlapping categories; the product, the process and the culture of innovation. Regarding the product of innovation, we outline the lessons learned about tensions created by ambitions of radical innovation in a public sector context, challenged by the idea of small-scale experiments and the participant’s feelings of inferiority. As for the process of innovation: we share the lessons learned about how linear and non-linear thinking affects the process of innovation. Addressing the culture of innovation, we discuss the lessons learned from working with a prototype testing approach in a system characterized by an evidence-based non-failure culture. The Case of the Executive Master of Public Governance Program in Copenhagen, Denmark: A co-operation between University of Copenhagen and Copenhagen Business SchoolGreve, Carsten (Frederiksberg, 2011)[More information][Less information]
Abstract: This paper gives an introduction to the Executive Master of Public Governance degree program in Copenhagen, Denmark – a joint effort by University of Copenhagen and Copenhagen Business School aided by Aalborg University. The degree program itself began its first intake of executive students in August 2009. The average age of participants is 45 years. By the summer of 2011, the Copenhagen MPG program had enrolled 500+ public managers from Denmark as executive master students. In order to understand the context of the program, the paper gives an introduction to the background of the establishment of the program which was a result of a government reform – the Quality Reform – agreed and also funded partly by the Danish Parliament in 2008. The second part of the paper describes the organization and purpose of the program. The third part presents the content of the degree program. Abstract: European Commission funded research is driven by the objective of integrating excellent research in Europe by using public funding to gain momentum and sustainability. This paper presents the results of an analysis of the management patterns of 20 Networks of Excellence. Our analysis indicates an absence of business management competences in the project consortia and unclear criteria for sustainability. Sustainability strategies appear to be ad hoc driven and orchestrated by the project monitoring events, rather than built in the consortia management structure. The paper advocates for bringing onboard conventional management models along with strategic positioning, business models, and business plans. Abstract: Our study explores cultural cognition in comparative U.S. – Japan employment relations through interdisciplinary analysis of Japanese Supreme Court regulation of the post-World War II lifetime employment system and the latest data available on Japan's collective bargaining-based approach to employee participation in managerial prerogative. The comparative social policy aim is to examine and account for observed employment relations variance in the U.S. and Japan, given their similar labor legislation. Japan’s Supreme Court recognizes lifetime employment as an institutionalized practice and we report all 236 references to the term “lifetime employment” in Japanese case law: 178 regional cases, 43 regional superior cases, and 15 Supreme Court cases. Quantitative analysis of Supreme Court cases contextualizes these references in post-World War II history; qualitative analysis focuses on the Court's discourse. Causally related to this recognition, management councils (a form of employee participation in managerial prerogative) are also a defining feature of Japanese employment relations at the enterprise level. Despite unionization rate declines in both nations, the persistence of Japan's participatory employee relations system contrasts sharply with recent U.S. state-based legislative assaults on long-standing collective bargaining, particularly for public sector unions. The concept of cultural cognition, recently deployed in legal studies to account for domestic U.S. risk, public policy and voting preferences, offers theoretical grounds for better understanding of the observed comparative variance in employment practices. We conclude with proposals for organized labor in the U.S. to strengthen prospects for informal network proliferation and employee participation, with the goal of enhancing national competitiveness. Abstract: Problems are inevitable in buyer supplier relationships. Purchasing professionals spend considerable time solving operational problems, such as those pertaining to quality and delivery performance. This paper reports on a qualitative study of problem solving processes in three buyer-supplier relationships. These processes are time consuming, costly, and involve a number of actors in both the buying and supplying companies. The theoretical framework that forms the basis for the study is the problem solving model of Lang, Dittrich, and White (1978). The findings show that coordination of problem perceptions and motivation of all involved actors are main challenges for the responsible problem solver. Abstract: Turisme regnes som et af verdens største erhverv. UNWTO, der er turismens hovedorganisa-tion globalt har opgjort antal ansatte til 235 mio., dvs. 9,2 % af alle job, og turismens andel af verdens bruttonationalprodukt (BNP) til 9,7 %. Turismen fortsætter med at vokse. Økono-misk krise og finanskrise, askesky mv. har betydet kortvarige afvigelser fra væksttrenden og enkelte ændringer i udviklingen af turismedestination. Europa modtager langt de fleste turister, og turismen er derfor et meget stort erhverv i de fleste EU-lande. Fra Kommissionens side er der nu - siden turisme med Lissabon traktaten er blevet et EU anliggende - pr. 30. juni 2010 udformet et mål om, at EU skal være verdens turismedestination nr. 1 og en politik, der omfatter 21 punkter, se for eksempel Lise Lyck; ”Handlingsplan for Dansk Turisme”. Denne publikation kan købes for 150 kr. ved henvendel-se til ll.tcm@cbs.dk. Publikationen er også fremlagt på dette møde. Dansk turisme har desværre haft betydelige problemer med konkurrenceevnen og har som det eneste EU land gennem en årrække har haft en aftagende markedsandel i udenlandske overnatninger. Det er baggrunden for, at erhvervets aktører og nogle politikere har arbejdet for at erhvervet kan blive konkurrencedygtigt og bidrage mere til at skabe økonomisk vækst, velfærd og arbejdspladser i Danmark. Abstract: Det er ingen hemmelighed, at turismen i Danmark har svært ved at klare konkurrencen med andre lande på langt de fleste områder inden for både fritids‐ og businessturismen. I den forbindelse skal gøres opmærksom på, at turisme omfatter overnatning, måltider, attraktioner og events, shopping og transport. Den manglende konkurrenceevne har medført tab af markedsandele på de internationale markeder, og især er der kommet en stor ubalance i relation til Tyskland, da antallet af tyske overnatninger i Danmark er faldet voldsomt, mens antallet af danske overnatninger i Tyskland er forøget betydeligt. Dette er et særligt problem for Bornholm, hvor turisme og andre ny erhverv gerne skal skabe indkomst, der kan erstatte/supplere de gamle traditionelle erhverv landbrug og fiskeri, som i adskillige år ikke har kunnet skabe en tilstrækkelig indtjening på Bornholm. En sådan omstillingsproces er vanskelig, og tager tid. Bornholms befolkning er stadig for nedadgående, ca.500 pr år, hvilket er beregnet til en årlig nedgang i indkomst på 5,5 mill. kr (oplyst af Niels Christensen Andersen, Bornholm Regionskommune på Realdania‐konferencen Mulighedernes Land, 15‐11‐2012 ‐ Bornholm modtog 77 mill. kr. over 6 år fra Realdania). Abstract: Very little research – if any – has been done to find out what happens to leadership and working live when Chinese companies settle in Denmark. This paper argues that it is worth investigating this topic, as I assume that the numbers of Chinese companies locating themselves in Denmark will increase in the coming years. The aim of the paper is firstly to give an overview of the literature that deals with the development of Chinese companies going abroad, and it is shown that the direct outward investments of China is experiencing a rapid growth. Secondly I like to look at leadership and working lives in China, and the lesson learned from the literature is that leadership and working life in China is diverse and continuously evolving. But some trends may be identified like different institutional regimes and different types of companies. Thirdly I look at leadership and working life in Denmark, and I compare leadership and working life in the two countries showing that there are many differences. These differences may have an impact on the way Chinese companies handle their encounters with ‘strangers’ when they establish themselves abroad, but we do not know if this is happening. I conclude by outlining a way of how to empirically study the interaction between Chinese and Danish managers and employees working together in a Chinese company in Denmark. Abstract: This paper aims lhghgat an exploration of leadership in the context of pervasive organizational control, in the form of standardized measurement systems. Measurement practices are proliferating in contemporary organizations, with ever more aspects of both organizational and private life being monitored and measured (Clegg & Courpasson, 2006). These systems are generally seen as an important part of organizational control regulating and shaping both actions of organizational members, and their own self-understanding or identity (Alvesson & Willmott, 2002). The image of the iron cage of bureaucracy, where action is tightly regulated, has in part been exchanged for the image of soft controls, regulating values and identities rather than behaviors and actions. Kärreman and Alvesson (2004), however, point out how these two types of control might work in tandem, constituting a strong regulating force. In contrast to this literature that emphasize the constraints on individual agency, the leadership literature emphasize the powers of leaders to influence and shape organizations and organizational processes (Yukl,2002). Leadership is commonly associated with driving and facilitating change and development. Theories of leadership emphasize (among other things) vision, personal engagement, interpersonal relationships, and ability to empower subordinates. How, then, can leaders exercise their agency and enable change when faced with systems generally seen as regulating rather than facilitating agency? It is this paradox that we wish to explore in this paper. We take the case of employee surveys, being a common practice in western organizations, that paradoxically constitute a standardized system aiming at change and development, and explore how these are experienced and managed by leaders in various organizations. We wish to analyze in terms of leadership how these standardized systems migh on the one hand constrain leadership action, and on the other hand be utilized in change related initiatives, thereby preserving leadership agency. Abstract: This paper explores the role of budgeting in the Danish film industry and seeks to illustrate the positive effects a line-budget might have on the creativity and innovativeness in film production. In our analysis we provide illustrative examples of the enabling and facilitating role of budget constraints on film production from the Danish film industry in general as well as from a case study of the process of making the Danish film “The Island of Lost Souls” in particular. We draw on Elster (2000)’s constraint theory and suggest that the constraints imposed on agents by line-item budgeting under some circumstances lead to situations where ‘less is more’ as line-item budgeting might be used to focus creative behavior as well as pre-commit the agent against passion and time inconsistency. Abstract: This paper investigates properties of translation processes, as observed in the translation behaviour of student and professional translators. The translation process can be divided into a gisting, drafting and post-editing phase. We find that student translators have longer gisting phases whereas professional translators have longer post-editing phases. Long-distance revisions, which would typically be expected during post-editing, occur to the same extent during drafting as during post-editing. Further, both groups of translators seem to face the same translation problems. We suggest how those findings might be taken into account in the design of computer assisted translation tools. Expatriates´ Identity Work in Reverse Knowledge TransferFeldt, Liv Egholm (Frederiksberg, 2011)[More information][Less information]
Abstract: In the last decade, researchers have shown that MNCs need to reverse knowledge transfer to secure their competitiveness in the global market. Lately this has been studied through re/expatriates. This study presents two exemplary cases from a study of 64 interviews conducted in 5 of the largest Danish MNCs. The purpose of this paper is twofold. First, to understand the role identity work plays in the ability and willingness of expatriates to learn and transfer knowledge. Second, to introduce Life Course Theory as an important methodological contribution with which to capture the entangled relationship between agency and structure within reverse knowledge transfer. Third, to develop and extend the current theoretical and methodological frame that govern the research of knowledge transfer. The present study indicates that institutionally generated organisational frames and work organising practices develop and feed certain power structures and communities, which influence the possibility of agency and as a result reverse knowledge transfer. The findings of this study stress that: 1) power is as an important productive force in identity work: consequently, it has the ability both to hinder and spur the processes of transformative learning and reverse knowledge transfer; 2) reverse knowledge transfer can be hindered by the lack of transformative learning in the single individual. The empirical material in this paper has been collected in the research project ”Cultural Intelligence as a Strategic Resource”. The project was funded by the Danish Strategic Research Council and conducted by Lisbeth Clausen, Liv Egholm Feldt, Martine Cardel Gertsen, Anne-Marie Søderberg, Verner Worm and Mette Zølner, Copenhagen Business School, Denmark. The research team have had privileged access to five of the largest Danish MNCs. While the collection of material has in general been carried out by the research team, Liv Egholm Feldt is the only person responsible for the analysis, reflections and perspectives presented in this paper. Abstract: Hitherto literature in the area of luxury and luxury brands predominantly applies a management-oriented view of luxury. This project departs from traditional views on luxury by focusing on consumers’ experiences with what they perceive as luxury. More specifically, the objective is to enhance understanding regarding how luxury experiences contribute to consumers’ selves. The empirical study is exploratory in nature and relies on consumer diaries regarding consumer luxury experiences. Abstract: This is an exploration, using Japanese language primary sources, of management policies and relat-ed industrial sector ecology of the post-World War II machine tools industry. From postwar devas-tation to global leader in worldwide market share by the mid-1980s, remarkably little is know of the factors that contributed to this sucess. Paralleling Max Holland’s 1989 Burgmaster case study method of the U.S. firm’s and industry failure, this study examines the history of Okuma Corpora-tion, an Aichi Prefecture machine tools producer. The role of management leaders and government support for viable firms is shown to provide the necessary industrial ecology for machine tools pro-ducers to recover, innovate, deal with successive oil shocks, and achieve a leadership role in the machine tools sector. Abstract: Acquisitions are standard components of the growth strategies of many organizations. Frequently, acquisitions raise important questions concerning how and to what extent the acquisition’s information technology (IT) needs to be integrated into the IT of the acquirer. We investigate how the initial conditions of business and IT alignment in the acquirer and the acquisition affect the complexity of the post-acquisition IT integration process, in acquisitions of business units by multi-business organizations. Adopting an IT alignment model for multi-business organizations, we explain the complexity of IT integration paths in two acquisitions made by the industry group Trelleborg AB. We identify four initial business and IT strategic alignment conditions where the IT integration process is a simple one-step process exploiting existing business and IT capabilities. Low compliance with these conditions leads to increased complexity because additional business and/or IT capabilities have to be developed to leverage the full potential of the acquisition.
