Abstract: Managers must aspire to understand their organization in a way that allows them to take appropriate actions when necessary and to be able to utilize tools which encourage the organization to behave in a desirable way. The field of performance management deals with these objectives and is becoming increasingly pervasive. However, the author’s personal experience and substantial scholarship suggest that performance management is linked to dysfunctional behavior in organizations. Various current explanations for the link between measurement and dysfunction revolve around observability or knowledge of the transformation process, but seem simplistic and inadequate. This work examines measurement as one representational form out of many others, for example text. It is proposed that the representational form used in performance management practice is implicated with dysfunctional behavior. This demands an exploration of the relevant facets of organizational reality which influence the relationship with various representational forms. After a theoretical positioning, the relationship is explored empirically through onsite visits at two Microsoft Corporation locations in Copenhagen and Redmond. Thirty stories of performance management, based on interviews with senior managers, are presented. The stories provide the basis for establishing a rich understanding of organizational reality and the implications of using various representational forms in terms of dysfunctional behavior. These implications lead to a fundamental rethinking of the form and boundaries of performance management theory and practice, and emphasize the need for a multi-paradigmatic approach to performance management, which is presented. Abstract: The Performative Power of Competence undersøger hvad kompetence bliver i en række konkrete arbejdspraksisser. Afhandlingen viser hvordan kompetence ikke blot handler om individuelle eller organisatoriske opkvalificeringsprojekter, men indebærer en social værdidom (om det kompetente og ikke-kompetente) hvilket betyder at kompetence ikke længere kan ses som "et underliggende karakteristika ved individet på arbejde” men må forstås som en dobbelt bevægelse; det vil sige som en samtidig udpegning af et problem (behov for at lære noget nyt) og en løsning (forudsætning for at skabe effektive og attraktive arbejdspladser). Afhandlingen betjener sig af et stort empirisk materiale fra den offentlige sektor der omfatter fire kompetenceudviklingsforløb, gennemført i perioden 2004-2006. Materialet er skabt i et samarbejde med fire konsulenter, hvor forfatteren selv har været til stede og har bidraget til udformningen af kompetenceudviklingsprocesserne. Formuleret kort markerer kompetence en særlig ideologisk tilværelse, der betoner proaktivitet, selvrefleksivitet og en aktiv tagen ansvar for organisationens mål. Et symptom på denne kompetenceideologi er når offentlige institutioner inviterer konsulenter indenfor for at uddanne coaches og forandringsagenter og skabe tværgående teams, der igen har til formål at skabe øget fleksibilitet, tværgående samarbejde og projektorganisering. Kompetencens performative kraft består i den samtidige diagnose af mangelstilstanden og udmåling af den rette behandling. For konsulenten bliver det et problem, hvis vedkommende ikke kan tilvejebringe den rette diagnose og kur, idet intet er værre end at få diagnosticeret et problem uden at få stillet den rette behandling i udsigt. Samtidig hævder afhandlingen også, at det vil være farligt for ikke at sige umuligt endeligt at kurere den mangelstilstand som kompetence producerer. Fx kan modstand mod forandring og kritik af det bestående ikke blot elimineres som kværulanteri, men må ses som væsentlige elementer i transformationen af det selv-skabende, selv-refleksive, ansvars-tagende subjekt. Kompetencens performative kraft legitimerer transformationen af subjektet så længe subjektet finder tilfredsstillelse, ikke i de enkelte afgrænsede kompetenceudviklingsaktiviteter, men i den uendelige søgen efter et kompetent jeg. Abstract: En længdesnitsundersøgelse fra 1969 til 1990 af de japanske stormagasiner Seibu og Parco under den tidligere Saison Groups auspicier (Japan) viser måden, hvorpå betydning udtrykkes og anfægtes som diskurs i det senmodernistiske forbrugersamfund. Kritisk diskursanalyse (CDA) støttet af omfattende, kvalitative interview af agenter og forbrugere har gjort det muligt at udnytte begreberne femininitet og begær, som Judith Butler har beskrevet i forbindelse med performativitet – det domæne, hvor styrke fungerer som diskurs – i reklamekampagner, der fx involverer værker af Ishioka Eiko. Butlers definition af begæret efter anerkendelse er med til at udtrykke, hvordan begæret manifesteres i samfundet, og hvorledes femininiteten har ændret sig over tid. Diskurs fremføres ikke blot som bestående af sprog- og billedtekst, men indeholder også to yderligere dimensioner: produktion, distribution og forbrug samt de sociale normer i en bestemt periode på det sted, hvor de pågældende diskurser er til stede. I forhold til den specifikke case fremhævede Saison Group kunst som en form for symbolsk kapital. Denne symbolske kapital var tæt forbundet med datidens økonomiske og sociale kræfter, og den virkede legitimerende for Seibu og Parco, der var efternølere inden for branchen. Måden hvorpå Parco kombinerede byggemodning og presseenheder med strategisk involvering af forbrugere og folk fra mediebranchen afspejles i begrebet “organisatorisk symbiose”. Succesen er afledt af den bestemte æstetik, der anvendes i deres reklamer. Reklamerne fungerede så til gengæld som en kanal og en slags æstetisk opdragelse i forhold til begær, som effektivt var med til at forme datidens subjektivitet. Abstract: Brugerne af de danske uddannelsesinstitutionernes hjemmesider er slet ikke tilfredse. Bedst på Nettet har gennem de sidste fem år placeret institutionernes hjemmesider nederst, når det kom til både brugervenlighed og kvaliteten af betjeningen. Alligevel viser en helt ny undersøgelse fra CBS, at lederne af de selv samme institutioner endog er meget optimistiske og tilfredse, når de skal evaluere medarbejdernes it-kompetencer og anvendelsen af dem. "Det er et meget tankevækkende paradoks, som undersøgelsen viser, når vi sammenligner den med brugernes hårde dom de sidste 5 år. Noget kunne tyde på, at der er store udfordringer for lederne med at koble brugernes oplevelse af hjemmesiderne og de kompetencer som medarbejderne har sammen. Det entydigt positive billede af it-kompetencerne som vores undersøgelse afdækker kan tolkes positivt; at der er håb forude, men også negativt; at der mangler informationskanaler til lederne, der hjælpe dem med at vurdere, hvordan det står til med medarbejdernes reele it-kompetencer," fastslår professor Kim Viborg Andersen, der er ophavsmand til undersøgelsen. Abstract: The growing practice of corporate social responsibility (CSR) has led to increasing research attention in the literature to the role of CSR strategy. CSR strategy is a concept for maximizing profits or benefits for both society and the company. Studies of CSR strategy during the 1990’s and the early 2000’s were mainly limited to examining the concept of CSR, and merely discussed the needs and importance of the strategic development of CSR. Recently, strategy researchers have proposed more specific CSR strategies by applying their knowledge of strategic management. This paper first summarizes these CSR strategy studies and then proposes an approach to CSR strategy from a new perspective. This paper also identifies issues that a company may face when implementing CSR and suggests approaches to CSR strategy to overcome these issues. To overcome the CSR issues, the paper discusses (1) a framework for recognizing the contribution that CSR activity makes to corporate performance, and (2) approaches to CSR strategy for resolving tradeoffs inherent to the CSR activity. This paper proposes that a company design its CSR activity so that it expands the company’s stakeholders, resources and capabilities. Secondly, because the impact of CSR activity occurs both through external factors, such as legitimacy and reputation, and through internal factors, such as implementation and learning, efforts to stimulate the processes are discussed. Lastly, based on the above considerations, the outcome of CSR, corporate performance and the resolution of tradeoffs inherent to CSR are further examined. This paper concludes by pointing out that, from the perspective of CSR strategy, it is most important for a company to implement CSR activity regarding it as a social business, based on a careful review of its core business. Abstract: Societies all over the world are complex systems of human beings interacting with each other for making a living. Understanding these societies is essential for international business whatever the company interacts through foreign trade, outsourcing production or foreign direct investments - FDI. Choice of location makes it necessary to do an analysis of relevant foreign societies. The existing models for these analyses are often too simplified, static and without enough emphasis on key determinants for these societies – their institutions. The quality of institutions is an import part of the explanation for the level of development in different countries (WB 2002, IMF 2005, WEF 2006); but there is no simple link between institutions and economic performance (Rodrik 2004). Abstract: The practice of illegally copying and distributing digital games is at the heart of one of the most heated and divisive debates in the international games environment, with stakeholders typically viewing it as a very positive (pirates) or very negative (the industry, policy makers). Despite the substantial interest in game piracy, there is very little objective information available about its magnitude or its distribution across game titles and game genres. This paper presents a large-scale analysis of the illegal distribution of digital game titles, which was conducted by monitoring the BitTorrent peer-to-peer (P2P) file-sharing protocol. The sample includes 173 games and a collection period of three months from late 2010 to early 2011. With a total of 12.6 million unique peers identified, it is the largest examination of game piracy via P2P networks to date. Analysis of the data shows that games of the “Action” genre, which include the majority of major commercial AAA-level titles, comprise 45% of the unique peers in the dataset, although games from “Racing”, “Role-Playing Game” and “Simulation” genres have higher numbers of unique peers on average than “Action” games. The ten most pirated titles encompass 5.27 million aggregated unique peers alone. In addition to genre, review scores were found to be positively correlated with the logarithm of the number of unique peers per game (p<0.05). Abstract: Cities increasingly brand themselves as an attractive place for tourists, investors, business and workforce. Yet, most place branding efforts do not take the diversity of their stakeholders and the variety of place perceptions into account. Our study, however, reveals significant discrepancies between internal and external stakeholders’ mental representations of a place brand, using the city of Hamburg as an example. We therefore argue that place brand management needs to align its brand communication with stakeholders’ interests, using an integrated approach to developing city-specific strategies for building target group-specific place brand architecture. Abstract: Until recently, the transfer of professional teamplayers between European clubs placed limits on the operations of a free market in that there were rules restricting the terms placed on such transfers. However, the ruling of the European Court of Justice in December 1995 in the "Bosman case" declared that such arrangements were contrary to the provisions of article 48 of the EEC treaty. The effects of the ruling –a redistribution of property rights from the clubs to the players- induced an increase of average player salaries and longer contract duration. Using data from the National Basketball Association (NBA) the paper discusses a highly similar reallocation of property rights in North America and tests empirically the -so far- inconclusive question, if remuneration and contract-length are complementary or substitutes.
