The Impact of Value Creation on the Internationalisation Strategy of FirmsBlagoeva, Denitsa Hazarbassanova (Frederiksberg, 2016)[Flere oplysninger][Færre oplysninger]
Resume: The question the thesis aims at resolving is: How do the value creation logics of firms impact their internationalisation? The overall aim of this PhD project is to explore and test an approach to understanding the internationalisation of service firms, based not on opposing them to manufacturing ones, looking at descriptive service characteristics nor industry effects, but on the way they create value. Why and how are service firms different? and What are the drivers behind their internationalisation? are the questions motivating this PhD project. It explores if the value creation specificities may be universal axes around which all MNCs, both manufacturing and service ones, configure themselves internally and externally across geographic locations. We do not in fact know that services are different from manufacturing - some empirical evidence suggests they are (e.g. Laanti, McDougal and Baume, 2009), some - that they are not (e.g., Terpstra and Yu, 1988). What we do know is that services are very important. They generate roughly 80% of GDP in the United States and the European Union, and the proportion is well over 50% in most countries, industrial and developing alike (International Monetary Fund, the World Bank and OECD, 2014). The attention to internationalisation of services has significantly increased and yet, many questions remain open (e.g. Pla-Barber and Ghauri, 2012). A Context-Specific StudyStucchi, Tamara (Frederiksberg, 2013)[Flere oplysninger][Færre oplysninger]
Resume: This Ph.D. dissertation investigates some International Business (IB) issues, which emerge from a specific context of research. The study takes inspiration from one of the most currently debated phenomena in IB literature, i.e. the internationalization of Emerging Market (EM) firms. The recent global emergence of these firms is substantial and particularly interesting under several points of view, especially because the IB literature has traditionally been dominated by western-centric theories, whose applicability to the case of EM firms might be questionable. The present Ph.D. thesis recommends an approach to the study of the internationalization of EM firms that can contribute to the advancement of IB literature in general. This is illustrated by the four research articles of the thesis, where a single-country EM context is used to draw general implications useful for researchers, practitioners and policy makers. More in details, the first paper “Emerging market firms’ acquisitions in advanced markets: Matching strategy with resource-, institution- and industry-based antecedents” studies the antecedents that can affect the motivations for the acquisitions that EM firms undertake in advanced markets. The second article, entitled “Time to internationalization and evolving institutions: An event history analysis of Indian firms”, analyzes domestic firms’ earlier versus later internationalization, during a period of radical institutional changes. The third paper, “The role of Overseas National Ownership in Outward FDI: A study of the Indian diaspora”, studies how the presence of overseas national shareholders can influence homeland firms' outward FDI. Finally, the last article is entitled "Business groups’ internationalization: The role of the domestic geographical scope" and analyzes one possible explanation for business groups’ internationalization, from an organizational learning perspective. The Ph.D. thesis is empirically based on a very comprehensive sample of Indian firms. The data are collected from different sources, i.e. the Prowess database, the Zephyr database, the Indian Census and the World Competitiveness Yearbook. The potential value of this singlecountry context perspective is highlighted throughout the Ph.D. thesis, and clearly emerges while I address the different issues of the four research articles. Balarezo, Jose Daniel (Frederiksberg, 2015)[Flere oplysninger][Færre oplysninger]
Resume: This project investigates the uses and effects of scenario planning in companies operating in highly uncertain and dynamic environments. Whereas previous research on scenario planning has fallen short of providing sufficient evidence of its mechanisms and effects on individual or organizational level variables, this research corrects this void by investigating the dynamics of organizational learning through the lenses of a corporate scenario planning process. This enhances our scientific understanding of the role that scenario planning might play in the context of organizational learning and strategic renewal. Empirical evidence of the various difficulties that learning flows has to overcome as it journeys through organizational and hierarchical levels are presented. Despite various cognitive and social psychological barriers identified along the way, the results show the novel and counterintuitive ways in which an organization uses scenario planning in balancing the tension between exploration and exploitation. Moreover, this research proposes two novel mechanisms designed to enhance learning flows. At the core of this dissertation are four papers which in combination solidify our theoretical understanding of scenario planning while simultaneously presenting a more nuanced account of the individual behaviors and social dynamics underpinning organizational learning. Møller Larsen, Marcus (Frederiksberg, 2013)[Flere oplysninger][Færre oplysninger]
Resume: Offshoring can be defined as the relocation of organizational tasks and services to foreign locations. Increasingly, firms experience that unforeseen costs and difficulties of managing offshoring undercut anticipated benefits; that unexpected challenges of offshoring jeopardize and eventually undermine initial objectives. Guided by the research question—what are the organizational consequences of offshoring?—the purpose of this thesis is to investigate why some firms fail when offshoring and other do not. The thesis consists of four research papers using various datasets and methodologies that investigate offshoring in an organizational context. The first paper investigates how the complexity of offshoring leads to ‘hidden costs’ of implementing offshoring activities. The second paper looks at how these hidden reconfiguration costs influence the process performance of the offshored activity and how this relationship is moderated by the modularity of that activity. The third paper investigates the effect of the organizational reconfiguration of offshoring on firms’ strategies. The final paper studies different strategies of adaptation in offshoring. Taken together, this thesis argues that whether firms relocate activities with the purpose of accessing resources or as a response to political pressures, the process of offshoring presents firms with the challenge of coordinating and integrating offshoring activities in a global organization. The complexities and uncertainties of an organization consisting of a number of offshored activities (in contrast to an organization with only co-located activities) require firms to invest additional resources in coordination mechanisms so that an efficient reintegration can be achieved. Analyzing Antecedents and Contingencies for Value CreationSax, Johanna (Frederiksberg, 2015)[Flere oplysninger][Færre oplysninger]
Resume: The aim of this thesis is to contribute to the literature with an investigation into strategic risk management practices from a strategic management and management accounting perspective. Previous research in strategic risk management has not provided sufficient evidence on the mechanisms behind firm practices, processes and tools for managing strategic risks, and their contingencies for value creation. In particular, the purpose of the thesis has been to fill the gaps in the literature by asking the question of: How does strategic risk management influence firms’ ability to deal with risks that may affect long-term competitive advantage and corporate longevity? To answer this question, the literature in strategic management and management accounting has been synthesized in order to identify management practices, processes and systems that take an active stance in making better decisions about risk-taking by preparing for the inherent uncertainty of strategic decisions. The thesis comprises four chapters that individually address the blind spots in the literature and in combination answer the overall research question. It suggests that proactive management practices such as strategic planning, interactive control systems and enterprise risk management processes, can be effective means in dealing with strategic risk. It further emphasizes the role of participative decision-making, a participative leadership style and the employees’ psychological safety for raising voice as important factors in order to benefit from these management practices most advantageously. Besides from enhancing our theoretical understanding of these mechanisms the thesis further provides empirical evidence on the interplay between the identified managerial practices and contextual factors as well as their ability on managing risks and create value for the firm. Zarzecka, Olga (Frederiksberg, 2016)[Flere oplysninger][Færre oplysninger]
Resume: Professional networks of senior managers have indisputable value for them as well as for their organizations. In recent years, much attention has been given to the structure of these networks as it reflects senior managers’ opportunity to access valuable resources. Surprisingly, the actual resources that senior managers acquire through their network ties, i.e. the tie content, remain heavily understudied. Hence, the purpose of this dissertation is to answer the following question: What resources flow through informal ties in senior managers’ professional networks, and why? The first chapter introduces the topic of this dissertation as well as the overall research question. The three next chapters are empirical studies of informal ties in professional networks of Danish senior managers, that together attempt to answer the overall research question. Chapter 2 looks into gender differences in resource exchanges and the effect of these differences on the number of, and extent to which, resources are provided by a network tie. Chapter 3 explores how firm underperfomance and social identity with corporate elite alter types of resources a network tie provides. Chapter 4 focuses on a tie’s internal dynamics and studies the effect of friendship on the extent and novelty of professional advice a tie provides. The fifth and final chapter of this dissertation summarizes the findings of the research papers in the light of the overall research question. Essentially, this dissertation suggests that the strategic value of professional informal network ties is contingent on the actual combination of resources these ties provide. Furthermore, this combination depends on micro-level mechanisms that affect three dimensions of tie content: the number of resources, the type of resources and the extent to which these resources are provided by informal network ties. Aesthetics’ Organizing Work and Employment in Creative IndustriesStjerne, Iben Sandal (Frederiksberg, 2016)[Flere oplysninger][Færre oplysninger]
Resume: Because of their temporary nature, work and employment in project based organizations are different from what we used to see in traditional organizational forms. Temporary employment, entailing less stability within the organization changes how employment and work are organized. Temporary systems are organized by transcending organization that go beyond the individual firm and replaces what used to be organized inside the firm. Following several calls for further research on these topics, this dissertation is a small step along the way as it investigates how work and employment are organized in temporary systems that lack stability and formal order. It advances our understanding of transcending organization in creative industries by adopting a practice based perspective. Empirically, the dissertation presents an in-depth study of the Danish film industry, which is an extreme case of a project based industry wherein temporary organizing dominates and challenges people to organize employment and work in new ways. The study draws on both ethnographic work and interviews conducted in the period from 2009-2015. The data set consist of 40 in-depth interviews of career trajectories with successful film workers with different functional roles and six months of ethnographic study of film projects in the Danish film industry, in particular delving into the film project Antboy and its sequels.
