Resume: Afhandlingen undersøger: 1)Hvordan staten har forholdt sig til de ikke-statslige omdømmeaktører og deres arbejdsområder. 2) Hvilke omdømmepolitikker den danske stat førte over for henholdsvis Sovjetunionen og USA inder den kolde krig (1945-1988). En diskussion af en række teorier om, hvordan stater relaterer til landets omdømme viser, at eksisterende teorier såsom nationbranding, public diplomacy og soft power ikke er anvendelige til en historisk analyse af ovenstående spørgsmål. Resume: Afhandlingens overordnede forskningsspørgsmål er, hvordan kapitalfondene skaber værdi for deres porteføljevirksomheder ved brug af metoder og kompetencer. Metoderne er de instrumenter, kapitalfondene anvender, mens kompetencerne er deres evne til at benytte metoderne effektivt. Siden den første kapitalfond så dagens lys i midten af 70’erne, har der været betydelig fokus på denne ejerskabsform. På den ene side er kapitalfondene blevet kritiseret for at skabe værdi for aktionærerne på andre stakeholderes bekostning, på den anden side er der gjort adskillige forsøg på at påvise, at virksomheder i kapitalfondsejerskab klarer sig bedre end andre virksomheder. Udgangspunktet for denne undersøgelse er, at ingen ejerskabsform er den optimale under alle forhold. Alle virksomheder gennemlever forskellige faser, og kapitalfondsejerskabet egner sig bedst for virksomheder, der har behov for hurtig transformation. Undersøgelser af, hvordan kapitalfondsejede virksomheder klarer sig i sammenligning med andre virksomheder, bidrager derfor ikke til at fremme forståelsen for kapitalfondenes værdiskabelsesproces. Kapitalfondenes funktion som tidsbegrænset ejer forstås bedst ved at analysere dem i den kontekst, de opererer. Kapitalfondene udgør ikke en homogen investorgruppe, der handler ens på alle udfordringer, men de råder over bestemte instrumenter og kompetencer, som tegner et mønster i den måde, de arbejder på. Afhandlingens formål er at afdække dette mønster. Metoden er en casebaseret analyse af tre danske kapitalfondsejede virksomheder, som er udvalgt efter en række krav til forskellighed. De tre cases er byggevarekæden DT, som var ejet af en kapitalfond fra 2003 til 2006, fjernvarmerørsproducenten Logstor, som var ejet af kapitalfonde i to omgange fra 1999 til 2013, og medicinalvirksomheden Nycomed, som var ejet af kapitalfonde i tre omgange fra 1999 til 2011. Der er således i alle tre tilfælde tale om virksomheder, som er exited, så kapitalfondsejerskaberne kan ses i deres helhed. Undersøgelsen er baseret på interviews med 21 personer, hvoraf de 20 har haft en tilknytning til en af de tre virksomheder, mens den sidste repræsenterer en bank, der har deltaget i finansieringen af alle tre virksomheder. De 20 personer med direkte tilknytning til de tre virksomheder repræsenterede fire grupper: kapitalfondene, bestyrelsen, ledelsen og medarbejderne. Repræsentanterne for de fire grupper redegjorde fra hver deres synsvinkel for, hvorledes de mente, kapitalfondene arbejdede med virksomheden. Resume: According to the Competition Act, a merger that impedes eective competition signi cantly, in particular by creating or strengthening a dominant postition, shall be prohibited. To decide whether this is the case the authorities need a quanti able model of the relationship between the variables that are directly aected by the merger and some measure of competition. In this paper we set up and calibrate a simple model of the interaction of the retail and the wholesale markets for high-end cosmetics in Denmark based on the Matas case. The model predicts that the acquisition of Matas - comprising roughly half of the market for high end cosmetics - may have a significant on retail prices and that the authorities had good reasons for making its approval conditioned on the removal of a number of contract-based barriers to entry. Analytically the main results are: (1) In a linear model with constant marginal costs the optimal wholesale prices are unexpected by the structure in the retail sector. (2) The ect on of buyer-power induced quantity dioscounts depends on the speci c design of the scheme: A relative discount on the list price the independent shops are charged increases the average retail price; A xed reduction relative to the pre-merger price reduces the average retail price). (3) Buyer-power induced retail price maintenance (RPM) increases the average retail price. RPM increases the competitiveness and pro ts of the merged shops if producers keep whole-sale prices unchanged. If, however, the producers adjust their wholesale prices, then RMP hurts merged and independent shops alike and benefits only the producers. Resume: Few would deny that the business environment plays an important role in the success or failure of firms everywhere. Social, political, and economic institutions are crucial determinants of business environment and to a firm’s ability to set and implement strategies. Factors such as political stability, the health of the macro---economy, the state of the infrastructure, and the availability of needed skills affect firms’ cost structures and ultimately their profits. African business environments are rapidly changing. From being viewed as the ‘hopeless Continent’ at the turn of the 21st century, Africa is now seen as a place of many opportunities (Economist, 2000, 2010). The Successful African Firms and Institutional Change (SAFIC) project was born out of the recognition that although African business environments remain to some extent challenging, it is clear that they are changing rapidly. The research project aims to investigate how and why African firms are able to be successful in such changing business and institutional environments. The project also focuses on firm specific characteristics that are rarely discussed in the context of African firms. In this project, we are conducting primary research in three African countries: Kenya, Tanzania, and Zambia. Researchers have since 2012 been studying two sub--sectors in each country. One – food processing – is common to the three countries; the second has been selected due to its importance for each country’s political economy. Resume: This research identifies a set of key success factors for sales force readiness, for driving the success of a new product launch within the pharmaceutical industry. Drawing from the analysis of fifty product launches in the Swedish pharmaceutical market, the study has succeeded in discriminating between four types of key success factors: the key factors that are important and crucial for a successful launch; the key factors that are important yet not necessarily crucial for a successful launch; the market conditions that are most ideal for a successful launch, and finally the type of newness of the product that is most suitable for successful launch. The overall aim of the research project was to provide guidance in optimizing the sales force readiness during the launch of a new pharmaceutical product. The research question is driven by the great importance and high cost of the sales force, together with the need for the pharmaceutical companies to continuously launch new products in a marketplace with increased challenges for all parts of the business. The research approach divides the research into two main parts. The first part reviews earlier studies/findings in the literature, collects empirical data in the form of six case studies and conducts six expert interviews with the purpose of formulating a Research Model. In the second part, the Research Model and its variables are quantitatively tested against fifty launched pharmaceutical products in Sweden. The study employs a bottom-up analysis method with Partial Least Squares Analysis, being predictive in nature, rather than the more conventional top-down and hypothesis-testing approach that typically employs regression analysis methods. In order to provide both practitioners and researchers with guidance on the results, its interpretation is presented in terms of its managerial implications as well as proposals for further research. Resume: Purpose – The article brings attention to the importance of corporate values and concrete leadership enactment of those values as a necessary condition for effective risk management outcomes. Design/methodology/approach – The content is based on practice-based research experiences supported by relevant literatures on risk governance and values-based management complemented with insights from case analyses and empirical studies. Findings – The paper explains why formal risk management approaches have limitations and outlines how the presence of official policies and codes of conduct is insufficient to deal with dynamic and complex high-impact situations where strong core values heeded by the corporate leadership, in contrast, leads the way to better risk behaviors throughout the organization. Major disasters in British Petroleum over the past decade illustrate how a formal code of conduct failed to do the job when the leadership in reality gave first priority to profits at the expense of the stated environmental values. The prioritized code of the US Coast Guard is used to illustrate the circumstances where core values support effective crisis, disaster and risk management outcomes. Originality/value – The paper goes against conventional wisdom of imposing tighter rules and regulations with formal controls as a panacea to cope with major disasters and shows why simpler means of guiding core values combined with delegation of responsibility to act under unexpected conditions is important in both private and public enterprise. Resume: Det kommunale landkort gennemløber netop i denne tid en markant forandring. Strukturreformen initierer en omvæltning af den offentlige sektor ikke set siden kommunalreformen i 1970’erne. Nye tider er på vej. Nye grænser trækkes – være det sig geografiske, opgaverelaterede, stillingskategoriske, organisatoriske- og styringsmæssige. Dette working-paper er et bidrag i diskussionen om strukturreformen og den generelle moderniseringsproces i den offentlige sektor. Det griber fat i en kommunal enhed, der allerede har gennemløbet en del af de omvæltninger, som landets øvrige kommuner pt. står overfor, nemlig Bornholms regionskommune. I paperet foretages en uvildig undersøgelse af regionskommunens nye styreform og administrative organisering, der er igangsat i kølvandet på kommunensammenlægningen i 2003. Working-paperet er desuden publiceret som en rapport i BUPL-regi (Januar 2005). Rapporten/working-paperet er således skabt på initiativ af BUPL (Forbundet for pædagoger og klubfolk), særligt BUPL-Bornholm. En tak skal derfor lyde til BUPL (Lars Feldt, Ulla Kjærgaard og Leif Kjærgaard) for finansiering af projektet og for information omkring aktuelle problematikker og udfordringer i og omkring Bornholms regionskommune. Vi takker desuden de interviewede fra regionskommunen for at have givet os en indsigt i facts, problemskitseringer og scenarieopstillinger – og på den måde bidraget til at give analysen kraft. Forud for rapporten er foretaget et pilotprojekt, der fungerer som inspirationskilde og vidensgrundlag for nærværende rapport/working-paper. Resume: Abstract This talk addresses the interaction of knowledge and organization in IB research, particularly research on the MNC. The argument is made that although the MNC literature is quite advanced with respect to its treatment of firm-level knowledge, several connected problems remain. In particular, there has been an over-emphasis on knowledge flows and an under-emphasis on knowledge stocks; the microfoundations of MNC knowledge are unclear; and there is a no clear understanding of the causal relations between knowledge stocks and flows and organizational control. Resume: The internal scientific evaluation of knowledge claims done by peer review is todayhas for the last 20 years been supplemented by new methods of knowledge assessment. These methods are usually taken from other sectors such as the public administration and the corporate sector. Because of their different backgrounds compared to the peer review method, it is necessary to critically examine them in relation to assessment of quality. But this also calls for a new understanding of science and knowledge. The article starts by briefly explaining this new understanding, before going into more details on the new methods of knowledge assessment and the perspectives behind them.
